Varicose veins are enlarged and swollen veins that often develop under the skin of the legs. They are normally purple or dark blue in color, and can appear lumpy, twisted or bulging. They may cause you distress and embarrassment, but will not usually result in medical problems.
The reason people develop varicose veins is that the small valves in the leg veins stop working properly. Veins carry blood to the heart, and contain a series of tiny valves that open and close to allow the blood to flow through. If these valves are damaged or weakened, the blood is able to flow back in the wrong direction and collect in the vein, causing it to become enlarged. Factors that make this more likely include pregnancy, aging, standing for long periods, and being overweight.
Apart from the distinctive appearance of varicose veins, many people have no symptoms. However, some people may experience aching, feelings of heaviness in the legs, and swelling of the ankles. These can be worse in hot weather, or after standing for long periods.
